One more time for the cheap seats in the back. “Home Funerals and Embalming”

I had posted for the hundredth time that embalming is almost never legally required in any State. I had posted for the millionth time that Home Funerals are legal in every State. And you know what? I felt pretty good. I had covered the laws that pertained to each individual State and I knew there was no room for question. I had mic dropped that shiz.

And then it happened. Mere seconds after posting about New York-you can guess what their laws are right- I get a little ding from my phone, and a comment pops up on my Instagram that reads, “I’m pretty sure home funerals are illegal in Manhattan.”

Cue the face smack heard round the world. That little comment. That innocent, sincere comment. Well, when you wonder how misinformation gets spread, that’s how.

So, I guess my question to you, is why do you believe the things that you do? Who told you that embalming was required? Who told you Home Funerals were not legal? Was it through a friend of a friend of a friend? Did you hear it on a show? See it in a movie? Read it in a book?

I write this to you, short and sweet. Question the things you know. Find the source! When someone shows you the laws that say contrary to what you believe, ask yourself why you are not persuaded? Is there a fear of being wrong? Are you attached to a lie? Why?

But don’t take my word for it…
